How to Remove a Virus from Your Computer

Downloading software, opening email attachments, and even using instant messaging software increases your risk of infection. If you suspect that your system has been infected with a virus, use the following steps to ensure safe removal.

  Scan your system

If you don’t already have an antivirus scanner installed, you can use a free online scanner to check for viruses and other threats to your system. Choose a scanner from a reputable source, such as Microsoft Safety Scanner. Once the scan has completed, it should provide information about any virus, malware, and other threat found on your system. If the scanner is able to remove the threats, no further action should be necessary.

   Take your computer offline

If your computer is infected with a virus, you should disconnect it from the Internet as soon as possible. The virus may attempt to send out personal and sensitive information from your computer. For example, banking details, account numbers, or a list of passwords may be collected from your computer and sent to the creator of the virus for fraudulent or malicious use.

   Search for information

The steps required to remove an infection will vary from one virus to the next. If you know the name of the virus that has infected your computer, you can use a search engine to find out how serious it is and what you can do to remove it. If you don’t know the name of the virus, try typing the symptoms (e.g. a slow system, unknown program running, or odd computer behaviour) into a search engine. Removing a virus from your system can be complicated and time consuming, but you can often find up-to-date advice online. Remember to use an uninfected computer to perform the search; avoid connecting the infected system to the Internet.

   Ask for help

There are many online forums dedicated to helping people with computer-related problems. If your Internet search proves fruitless, ask for help from an online community. Put as much detail as possible in your message, including your computer specifications, a list of the programs you have installed, and a detailed description of what has gone wrong with your system. In many cases, these online communities can help you to identify the virus and remove the infection.

   Reinstall your operating system

Sadly, some infections cannot be removed without performing a clean installation of your operating system. Reinstalling your operating system can be a lengthy process, but it may be the only way to remove the infection. If you are not confident in performing an installation, you should consult a computer technician who can talk you through the process. Reinstalling your operating system will clean your computer and remove the infection, but it should only be used as a last resort if all other steps have failed.
